The title, *The Divine Monitor*, suggests a picture built around the idea of an all-seeing presence watching over the viewer's conduct. Devotional prints that paired the Lord's Prayer with the Ten Commandments were a familiar part of home and Sunday school life in the nineteenth century, when families hung such images in parlors and classrooms as daily reminders of moral duty. Pictures like this were meant to be read as well as viewed, so the text and imagery were meant to work together. Look closely at how the lettering and illustration are arranged, since that balance between word and picture was central to how these prints were used.
