Castle Garden, the subject of this hand-colored lithograph, was a round stone fort built on a small island off the southern tip of Manhattan, near the Battery. Built in 1808 and known as Castle Clinton, it was later turned into an entertainment venue and then, from 1855, an immigrant landing depot before Ellis Island opened. This 1848 view from the Battery shows the fortification set against the harbor, a useful record of the waterfront when it was still a popular promenade for New Yorkers. Nathaniel Currier issued many such city views, and the hand coloring gives the water and sky a bright, lively finish.
