This engraving shows horses being caught on the open plains, the kind of scene that drew travelers to the American West and Texas in the 1830s. It appears as an illustration in A.A. Parker's *Trip to the West and Texas*, published in Concord in 1835, so it reflects a traveler's account rather than a firsthand photograph of the event. Wild horse herds, often called mustangs, roamed the Southwest and were captured by riders who worked in teams, a practice that fascinated eastern readers of the period. The print's date is not recorded, so the 1835 publication year is the best guide to when it was made.
