Although the record's title reads "Chateaubriant," the sitter is François-René de Chateaubriand (1768–1848), the French writer and statesman whose novels *Atala* and *René* helped define French Romanticism. He also served as foreign minister under Louis XVIII and held diplomatic posts in London, Rome, and Berlin. This engraving dates from between 1850 and 1900, a few decades after his death, when his reputation was still growing. Its interest lies in how such portraits kept his image before a public that was reading his works, including his posthumously published *Mémoires d'outre-tombe*.
