This portrait shows Octavius V. Catto, the Philadelphia educator and civil rights leader who also played ball for the Pythian Base Ball Club, one of the first Black teams in the city in the late 1860s. Catto taught at the Institute for Colored Youth and campaigned for streetcar desegregation and for Black men's right to vote after the Fifteenth Amendment. He was shot and killed in Philadelphia on election day in October 1871, during violence at the polls. His life links two causes that rarely get discussed together: the fight for a fair place on the ball field and the fight for a fair place at the ballot box.
