The title, "1867: The Evolution of the West in Four Decades, 1907," frames this chromolithograph as a before-and-after comparison, with its subjects set against the bison and the hunt. Although the print is dated around 1906, its title looks ahead to 1907, so it reflects the turn-of-the-century view of the frontier as something already past. By the early 1900s, the bison herds that had sustained many Plains peoples had been reduced to a small remnant through commercial hunting and settlement. Chromolithographs like this one were popular for their bright color and were often used to celebrate the nation's westward growth, which makes the image a useful record of how that story was told.
