The record names only Emma Godey, and it does not say who she was or what occasion led to the sitting, so the picture is best read through its origins. It comes from the National Photo Company collection, the work of a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., which in the early twentieth century recorded officials, society figures, and everyday city life. The print is dated only to a span between 1909 and 1932, a period when studio portraiture was becoming less formal, and that shift is worth noticing in how the sitter presents herself.
