Linus Pauling, the American chemist who later won two Nobel Prizes, is the particular figure in this portrait. His work on chemical bonding and molecular structure reshaped how scientists understood the arrangement of atoms, and he went on to become one of the most visible advocates for peace and nuclear disarmament in the twentieth century. This photoprint carries a copyright credit to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the organization that often circulated images of its speakers and honorees. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting itself is unconfirmed, but the portrait belongs to the broader tradition of scientific figures photographed for publication.
