Few portraits in this collection connect to as many distant places as this engraved likeness of Horace Capron, a man whose career ran from Illinois farms to federal offices and, eventually, to Japan. Capron served as U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture in the late 1860s, a post meant to gather crop information and promote scientific farming. In 1871 he went to Hokkaido as an adviser to the Japanese government's colonization office, where he encouraged American-style farming and livestock breeding. The engraving was produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, but its caption card is undated, so the exact date of the print remains uncertain.
