The actor Onoe Kikugoro appears here as Ōishi Yoshio, the samurai who led the forty-seven ronin in avenging their lord in 1703, and the print records a farewell performance in that role. The vendetta was a staple of the kabuki stage, and a star's leave-taking in such a part drew large audiences and made a fitting subject for actor portraits. The card on the mount bears the signature of Gototei Kunisada and a censor's seal, but the record also names Takizawa Bakin as creator and dates the print to 1806, so the attribution merits a closer look.
