Its title, "The Spirit of War Camp," points to the morale and daily life of military training camps rather than the battlefield. In 1918, the United States had built dozens of these camps to train the draftees and volunteers who were arriving in large numbers after the country entered the war in 1917. Life there combined drill, sanitation, crowded barracks, and the anxious wait before overseas service. Images from this period often aimed to show camp life as orderly and patriotic, so it is worth looking at what the scene chooses to emphasize and what it leaves out.
