From a high vantage point, the title suggests, this view offers a sense of the Sierra Nevada terrain that drew visitors to Yosemite long before roads reached it. Congress set aside Yosemite Valley as a protected grant in 1864, a step that helped lay the groundwork for the National Park Service, founded in 1916. Scenes from the upper slopes were a major draw for early tourists, painters and photographers, who came to record the granite cliffs, waterfalls and domes. Pictures taken from above also show how the valley's scale unfolds beneath the viewer.
