Ansel Adams made this view of Half Dome's sheer granite face in 1927, when the wall was still seen as a near-vertical barrier that few had climbed. He framed the rock so that its smooth, nearly unbroken surface fills most of the scene, and the tonal shifts in the stone carry the composition. The picture belongs to the period when Adams was building his reputation for large, carefully controlled images of the Sierra Nevada, and it helped shape how visitors and photographers thought about Yosemite's monolithic landforms.
