The "L-Z" brand on this crate label echoes the surnames of the firm's partners, A. Levy and J. Zentner, whose company packed the apples. Crate labels like this were printed in bright colors and pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping crates so that buyers could recognize a grower or packer's fruit at market and in shops. Because the labels were meant to be eye-catching and disposable, surviving examples offer a useful view of how apple merchants marketed their produce during the era of rail shipping.
