The title, "End of track, on Humboldt Plains," points to the temporary terminus where Central Pacific crews were laying rail across northwestern Nevada, following the Humboldt River valley eastward. This stereograph, number 317 in a series on the river scenes, was issued by a Sacramento studio between 1865 and 1869, the years when the railroad was pushing toward its 1869 meeting with the Union Pacific at Promontory Summit, Utah. Albumen prints like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scenes of construction a sense of depth and made the distant frontier feel close to home.
