The slogan on this 1918 color lithograph, "For every fighter a woman worker," sets out the poster's argument in a single line, and its subhead, "Back our second line of defence," places women's labor alongside the soldiers at the front. Ernest Hamlin Baker designed it for the Young Women's Christian Association, which during the First World War promoted women's participation in war industries, canteens, and other support work. The poster reflects a period when millions of American women moved into jobs that had been closed to them, and the YWCA's campaign framed that work as patriotic service rather than as a change in women's social roles.
