The phrase "over there" echoes George M. Cohan's 1917 song "Over There," which turned the words into a rallying cry for American troops sent to France. Here the slogan is aimed at the home front, asking those who stayed behind to take up their part of the war effort. Wartime appeals like this were common in 1918, when governments and charities used direct, second-person language to encourage people to buy bonds, give money, and support the troops. Notice how the wording places the sacrifice on the men overseas and the obligation on the reader.
