The caption card's imprint names the publisher, Gustave Pellet of the Quai Voltaire, and an exhibition at La Plume on the rue Bonaparte beginning April 22, 1896. The print belongs to *Elles*, a set of ten color lithographs Toulouse-Lautrec made that year after spending long stretches in Paris brothels, where he drew women between clients, at rest, and in private moments. Rather than showing them as glamorous figures of the stage, he presented them plainly and without judgment. Look for the flat fields of color and the tightly cropped compositions, which owe much to Japanese woodblock prints that had shaped European graphic art since the 1860s.
