The record names only a theme, so this picture stands for the wider world of print and authorship rather than one specific writer or place. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, writers often worked in modest studies lined with shelves, while publishers and bookshops became busy centers of literary life. Images of this kind were drawn to the quiet, scholarly routines behind novels, essays and poems. Look closely at the stacked volumes and writing tools, which show how reading and composing were physical, everyday work.
