The lithograph advertises the Canada Food Board's recipe books, a wartime publication aimed at home cooks, and it was printed in Montreal and Toronto by the Herald Press and Advertising Agency sometime between 1914 and 1918. Canada's food-conservation campaigns grew more urgent after the country's Food Board was established in 1917, when households were asked to cut back on wheat, meat, and fats so that more food could reach Allied troops and civilians in Europe. Posters like this one turned that request into everyday domestic advice, presenting the kitchen as a front in the war. Its bright colors and direct appeal to the home cook make it a useful window onto how governments recruited ordinary women into the war effort.
