Lillian Russell, the stage singer and actress, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Russell was one of the most famous performers in American theater from the 1880s into the early 1900s, admired for her voice, her beauty and her stylish public image. The Bain News Service, which made and distributed news photographs in New York, produced many portraits of stage figures like her for newspapers and magazines. The record's date is unknown, and its title comes from unverified notes on the negative, so the exact sitting remains uncertain.
