Simonopetra clings to a sheer rock more than 300 meters above the Aegean Sea on Mount Athos, the monastic peninsula in northern Greece, and that dramatic perch makes it one of the most recognizable sites on the Holy Mountain. Founded in the medieval period, the Greek Orthodox monastery was long reached by a net or basket hauled up the cliff face, a method that reflected how isolated its community remained. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose photographs of distant places and events circulated widely in American newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title is unverified in the record, so the exact view and date should be checked before relying on them.
