This glass negative is identified only by the name "Chas. Watson," taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its plates. The Library of Congress notes that this information is unverified, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. Bain's agency, founded in New York around 1899, supplied newspapers with news and portrait photographs for about fifteen years, and its plates were made on glass, the standard medium for sharp, reliable negatives at the time. Without a date or further caption, the plate is best read as one small part of the larger Bain file of early twentieth-century American life.
