The record names a single individual, Chas. A. Cottrill, and dates the negative to 1911, though the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of a New York news photography agency that sent pictures of people and events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Because the surviving record gives little beyond the name and date, the picture is best understood as a working press image from that period, when glass plates were the standard medium for quick newspaper reproduction.
