Marcel Marceau, the French mime born in 1923, is the figure this print is built around, and the record gives little beyond his name and a note that the photograph came from a New York City source. The caption card carries the tracings "Mimes" and a shelf mark, which places him within a longer American interest in pantomime as a stage art. Marceau rose to fame after the Second World War, when his silent character Bip, with its whitened face and striped shirt and top hat, won audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Portraits like this one were often used to publicize his touring performances.
