Among the illustrations in J. Ross Browne's *Etchings of a Whaling Cruise*, this wood engraving shows sailors jostling over salt junk, the coarse salted beef that was a staple of a whaleship's diet. The book appeared in 1846 as a firsthand account of life at sea, and Browne's own time on a whaler gave the text its authority. This plate, opposite page 142, captures the rough, competitive side of mealtime aboard ship, when provisions were limited and each man fought for his share. The wood engraving style, typical of mid-century book illustration, makes it a useful view of everyday conditions on a working vessel.
