Sphingidography, the family of hawk moths, was a favorite subject for natural history painters in the second half of the nineteenth century, when collectors and museums were cataloguing insects with unusual precision. This watercolor, attributed to an artist identified only as P. Sandio, is dated somewhere between 1850 and 1900 and is held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. Its record gives little beyond the title and medium, so the painter's identity and purpose remain uncertain. Hawk moths, with their heavy thoraxes and rapid flight, were often rendered in such drawings to show wing patterning and body structure for study.
