Saturnidae is the family of giant silk moths, and this watercolor by P. Sandio renders the group in the careful, layered style that naturalist artists favored in the second half of the nineteenth century. Painters of this period often worked from preserved specimens or live rearings, aiming to show wing markings, eyespots and body structure accurately enough for identification. The record dates the work only to between 1850 and 1900, so little is known about the artist beyond the signature, but the piece belongs to a wider tradition in which hand-painted insect studies served as both scientific reference and decorative natural history.
