The bear seated in the foreground is the detail that sets this sheet apart: it shows a polar bear at rest on snow while a second bear walks behind it, so the composition reads as a quiet pair rather than a single animal study. The print is a chromolithograph, made by layering a separate lithographic stone for each color, a process that let publishers sell affordable, richly colored images for homes, schools and shop walls in the decades around 1900. Polar bears were a popular subject then, as Arctic exploration and zoo exhibitions drew public attention to animals of the far north. The record dates the sheet only approximately, to between 1900 and 1930, so its exact printing date remains uncertain.
