Two tiger swallowtails open their wings over a single bloom in this hand-colored engraving, the pair set against a plain ground so the yellow-and-black banding and the blue flush on the hindwings read clearly. The plate is numbered 40, which places it within a larger sequence of natural history illustrations, the kind of work printmakers produced to catalog insects and plants for readers who could not collect specimens themselves. Hand coloring of engravings was a common finishing step, with colorists working by eye from a model or the artist's notes, so the tints vary slightly from one copy to the next. Tiger swallowtails were among the most recognizable butterflies in eastern North America, and their stylized wing pattern made them a favorite subject for early naturalist artists.
