This 5-by-7-inch glass negative carries only one word of identification, "Hoover," a title the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards and that the Library of Congress lists as unverified. George Grantham Bain's New York agency sold news photographs of public figures to newspapers, so the plate probably shows someone in the public eye. Herbert Hoover fit that description as Secretary of Commerce in the 1920s and as president from 1929 to 1933. The record gives no date, so the occasion cannot be confirmed, but the glass format points to the agency's early working years, when news pictures were made on large glass plates.
