The record gives only the single word "Hoover," written by the Bain News Service on the negative or its caption card, and that identification is unverified. The name fits Herbert Hoover, who served as secretary of commerce under Presidents Harding and Coolidge before he was elected president in 1928. Bain News Service was a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, so its glass negatives were made for quick reproduction in print. Glass plates like this one hold fine tonal detail, and the collection as a whole documents public figures and events of the early twentieth century.
