Boulders at the foot of Little Round Top set this scene apart, with soldiers lying among the rocks beside Plum Run, the stream that ran through the fighting on July 2, 1863. The ground around Devil's Den and the slope of Little Round Top saw some of the battle's heaviest fighting, and the low valley here came to be called the Valley of Death. Photographs of the dead were made in the days after the battle by teams working for Alexander Gardner, and they showed the cost of the fighting to a public far from the field. The photographers chose to show the bodies plainly, which makes the picture a stark record of the battle's aftermath.
