Cupid, the winged archer of love, is the figure this card places front and center, drawing his bow as the inscription "To my Love" sits beneath him. Valentine cards like this one grew popular in the nineteenth century, when printers began producing mass-made sheets of sentimental imagery that people could buy and send to a sweetheart or friend. Cupid, borrowed from Roman mythology, became one of the most common motifs of the form, standing in for the sudden, arrow-struck pull of romantic feeling. Look closely at the decorative border and lettering, which show how printers of the era combined classical imagery with the ornate styling of their day.
