The German title translates as "war picture exhibition," pointing to a wartime practice of showing images of the front to civilians at home. By 1918, as the fighting neared its end, such shows were used to sustain morale and frame the war in a particular light, while also giving people a visual sense of battlefields they could not see. Exhibitions like this drew on paintings, drawings, and photographs by soldiers and official artists, and their selection and captions reflected what authorities hoped viewers would believe. It is worth considering who chose what to show, and what was left out.
