This long panoramic print shows the football squad of the United States Indian School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, made in November 1905, when the photographer H. F. Peck deposited it for copyright. Founded in 1879 to educate Native American students, the boarding school used sports, and football in particular, to build its public profile, and its team beat several major college sides in the early 1900s. Group portraits like this one were often taken to record a season and to circulate among supporters, so the players' arrangement, uniforms and expressions offer a window into the school's athletic life at the time.
