The panoramic format sets this photograph apart: at nearly 42 inches wide, it spreads the whole 1905 Carlisle team across a single print, with players arranged in a long line. The team belonged to the United States Indian School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a boarding school founded in 1879 to educate Native American students, many of whom had been taken from their families. Its football squad became one of the best-known teams in the country in the early 1900s, meeting major eastern college programs on the field. The photographer, H. F. Peck, deposited the image for U.S. copyright in November 1905, so the print also records how the team presented itself to the public that year.
