A small child stands on a balcony with doves carrying letters tied to their necks, a sentimental image of the kind that filled Valentine's Day cards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cupid and doves were common shorthand for courtship, and artists often used birds as messengers because they seemed to carry affection from one person to another. Here the child takes the place of the traditional winged love god, which shows how Valentine imagery softened the mythological Cupid into a figure of innocent, playful romance. Notice the care in the rendering of the birds and the pale, dreamlike setting, which were typical of the greeting-card trade of the period.
