Cherubs and doves frame the greeting "To my Valentine" on this card, a design that draws on a long tradition of Victorian-era sentiment. Such cards were often printed with embossed or lace-like borders and hand-finished touches, and they were exchanged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a more personal alternative to a spoken declaration. Cupid, the winged figure of love from Roman mythology, appears here as a small child, while doves have long symbolized devotion and gentle affection. Notice how the verse-like phrasing and decorative motifs worked together to say what the sender might find too bashful to say aloud.
