Third Street, seen from the corner of Spruce Street, shows a working stretch of Philadelphia at the turn of the nineteenth century. The engraving is plate 18 from *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*, a series of street views produced by the English-born engraver William Birch and his son Thomas. Birch was known for careful topographical detail, and the hand coloring found on some copies adds warmth to the brick facades and the signs of daily street life. Views like this one, made as the federal government was leaving for Washington, give historians a fairly precise picture of the city as it stood at that moment.
