Britannia, the personification of Britain, bends toward a grieving Italia in this pencil drawing, captioned "You have lost a noble King." Its August 8, 1900 publication date falls within days of two royal deaths that summer: Italy's King Umberto I, shot by an anarchist at Monza on July 29, and Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who died on July 30. Pairing the losses under one allegory was a common device in the illustrated press of the period, and the title "Sisters in sorrow" presents the two nations as equals in grief.
