This engraving takes its title from a Latin phrase, "Divina lucis radijs repente obumbrata," which roughly means "suddenly overshadowed by the rays of divine light." It was printed as plate 23, on page 112 of a 1613 Latin life of Saint Teresa of Avila, the 16th-century Carmelite reformer whose visions and mystical writings made her one of Catholicism's most widely read saints. The book appeared the year before her beatification in 1614, when her cult was spreading across Europe. Illustrated lives like this one used engraved plates to turn her spiritual experiences into images that readers could study and meditate on.
