What sets this picture apart is its curved tower, its wall of wooden shingles, and the arched wooden door set into the base, all captured in black and white. Towers like this belong to the shingle style that spread across New England in the late 1800s, when builders wrapped houses in cedar shingles to create smooth, unbroken surfaces and often added rounded turrets. Southeastern Massachusetts, with its mill towns and harbor communities, saw a good deal of construction in this manner during those decades. Look closely at how the shingles catch the light and how the arch frames the door, which show the care the builder gave to texture and form.
