A shingled water tower topped with a cupola is the detail that sets this picture apart from the usual views of Southeast Massachusetts. Water towers of this kind were built to hold up a town's supply and pressure, and many New England builders clad them in wood shingles and capped them with small decorative cupolas so they would blend with the houses and churches around them. The black and white format suggests an early twentieth-century date, when local photographers often recorded such civic structures as points of town pride. Notice how the shingles and the cupola's lines show the craftsmanship of the period.
