This daguerreotype shows a man whose name has been lost, so the sitter survives only as a face fixed on a small silvered copper plate. Daguerreotypes like this one date from the first year or so after Louis Daguerre's process was made public in 1839, when portraits required sitters to hold still for minutes in bright light. The metal surface gives the image a mirror-like sheen that shifts with the viewing angle, and that quality, along with the careful sharpness of detail, is worth noticing in a picture from so early in the medium's history.
