Clipper Ravine, near the small community of Clipper Gap in Placer County, California, is crossed here by a timber trestle that carries a railroad line over the steep foothill terrain. The Central Pacific Railroad built its route through this part of the Sierra Nevada in the mid-1860s, and trestles like this one let the grade cross deep ravines where filling the gap with earth would have been slow and costly. Trestle construction of this kind was central to the railroad's push toward the mountains, and the structure shows how much of the work depended on timber and hand labor.
