The Statue of Liberty itself does the asking here, with the headline putting the appeal in her voice: billions of dollars are needed, and needed now. Printed in 1918, the year American troops were fighting in France, the lithograph is a war bond appeal that drew on a national symbol to press citizens to lend money to the government. The Liberty Loan campaigns of 1917 to 1919 relied heavily on posters like this one, which turned the monument into a figure of wartime urgency.
