The Statue of Liberty stands at the center of this 1917 color lithograph, which uses the monument to urge viewers to buy $10 Liberty Loan certificates as a patriotic duty. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and the federal government turned to bonds sold directly to ordinary citizens to help finance the war. Posters like this one were printed in large numbers and displayed in post offices, storefronts and workplaces, where their bold imagery tried to turn a financial purchase into a civic act. This copy is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection of war posters.
