Here the Statue of Liberty serves as a recruiter for the home front, with the slogan telling viewers that if they cannot enlist, they can invest by buying Liberty bonds at their bank. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and the federal government soon began selling Liberty Bonds to pay for the war effort. Posters like this one asked ordinary citizens to take part through their savings, and the statue, already a national emblem of freedom, made the appeal easy to recognize. The record places it in the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection, a group of early twentieth-century American prints.
