Bring in your $50 and take home a bond: this 1918 lithograph advertises the Third Liberty Loan, with its 4 1/4 percent rate, and uses the Statue of Liberty as its symbol. The United Cigar Stores Company, a national chain of tobacco shops, placed its name on the poster, which reflects how retail storefronts helped sell war bonds to ordinary Americans. The Third Liberty Loan drive took place in the spring of 1918, when the federal government was borrowing heavily to pay for the country's part in World War I. Posters like this one blended patriotic imagery with everyday commerce, asking citizens to lend money to the nation at the same counters where they bought cigars.
